Outstanding & Huge Chinese Porcelain Canton Vase
An Outstanding & Massive Antique Chinese Porcelain Vase
Dating to the 19th Century, Qing Dynasty.
The vast and finely potted body, with applied handles to the neck, beneath a broad, flaring rim. The surface richly hand-painted in famille rose enamels, each side with a large cartouche, one depicting a courtly scene with numerous officials, the other containing a stunning array of exotic birds. The surface is further adorned with a scattering of flowers and precious objects, all relief moulded and sitting proud of the surface, lending this vase a further, tactile dimension.
This spectacular and imposing vase has it all - size, beautiful colouration and excellent condition (please see below for full condition report).
Hard to find on this scale and in such fine order, this piece has the size and presence to grace a hallway or provide a strong focal point in any living space.
Dimensions -
Approx 61.5 cms tall.
Condition -
In overall excellent condition and displaying beautifully.
A few notes however:
1) There is a firing 'pop' to the inside of the neck (approx 1 cm across). This has been clearly photographed - see below.
2) One of the applied handles has a tiny chip away to the underside edge. This is barely noticeable. This same handle has a line running around the two points where it joins the main body of the pot. I have inspected this line very closely under 10X illuminated magnification. It remains unclear as to whether this is a firing line, or, a join where the handle has been reapplied.
On balance my opinion is that it is a firing line. My reasoning: a) the handle rings bright and true when tapped, making the same sound as the handle on the other side, b) the handle on the other side has a short PARTIAL line running around ITS join, and this line looks very much like the more extensive line on the first handle.
We have over 50 images of this spectacular vase on file. I am more than happy to provide detail shots (including those of both handles) to any prospective buyer. Just call or email.
