George IV Exeter Silver Teaspoon, Wm. Hope, 1823
This is a George IV Sterling Silver Teaspoon in the classic Fiddle pattern. The spoon has the initials "J.E" engraved at the top of the stem.
The teaspoon is made by William Hope in Plymouth and assayed in Exeter in 1823. William Hope was a specialist spoon maker based in Plymouth Dock and was active between around 1815 and 1835. The Exeter assay office, established in 1701, was the principle assay office for South West England until it was closed down in 1883. Because of its comparative rarity, Exeter silver is much sought after by collectors.
Condition is good with just some wear to the tip caused by stirring many cups of tea over nearly 200 years! Other than that there is just the superficial wear you would expect in a spoon of this age. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teaspoon is 13.6cm / 5.4" long and weighs a respectable 13.6g / 0.48oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter "g" for 1823, the George III duty mark (although George IV became King in 1820, his duty mark wasn't introduced until 1824) and the WH makers' mark for William Hope.
