Early 20th C. Jardiniere, Maud Bowden at R Doulton
Here we have an elegant Early 20th Century Jardiniere in the Chiné Gilt style. This cauldron type shape was always referred to by Doulton as a Three Handled Camp Kettle. The body is decorated in the chiné gilt style created by pressing lace into the clay shortly after the pieces had come off the wheel. After first firing this was then hand painted and gilded. The technique was developed by John Slater, Doulton's senior manager in the 1880s, and remained regularly in use until the First World War and only rarely thereafter.
The jardiniere was decorated by Maud Bowden at Royal Doulton's famous factory in Lambeth, South London. Maud Bowden joined Doulton's renowned art department in around 1902/3 and had a long career with them, leaving only in 1937. She was a Senior Assistant but also decorated some pieces as principal artist.
Condition is extremely good, with no chips or cracks and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jardiniere stands 16cm / 6.3ins high and is 18.5cm / 7.3ins in diameter. It weighs 1.18kg / 41.6oz.
The inside base is stamped with the Royal Doulton mark and the hand written M B for Maud Bowden is about half way up one side.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
