Doulton Burslem Pair of Harry Barnard Signed Plate
We have for sale a very fine pair of Victorian Harry Barnard Doulton Burslem dessert plates.
These beautifully moulded dessert plates are decorated with a gilt and dark green rococo design border surrounding polychrome flowers on a white and gilt ground. The back of the plates carry the Doulton Burslem mark for 1886-1891, the impressed mark Doulton 9 and a variation of the Harry Barnard script makers mark.
The plates are 9 and 1/4 inches (23.5cm) and are both in excellent condition with no chips cracks or repairs and only very minor minimal surface wear.
About Harry Barnard - was the son of a London silversmith and initially worked in the family modelling shop before going to the Royal College of Art. From there he moved to Doulton Lambeth in 1880 where at the age of 22 he became under manager of the studio. He left Doulton in 1895 to work with James Macintyre and then joined the Wedgwood factory in 1896, eventually becoming the Wedgwood London manager. He also worked on the project that gave rise to the famed new edition of the Portland vase and wrote/lectured on Wedgwood. He played a significant part in the establishment of the Wedgwood factory museum.
Harry Barnards script mark in its perfect form consisted of a B with an internal additional stroke giving the impression of an embedded H, however, his marks were not always carefully produced, often the B was incomplete and could look like an R or the downward stroke could look like a J, in some cases both the B and the H could be disjointed.
