Bernard Leach - St. Ives Pottery Slipware Dish
BERNARD LEACH - St. IVES POTTERY - SLIPWARE DISH
An early and rare signed Bernard Leach (1887 - 1979) slipware dish.
The shallow body of the dish is press-moulded from heavily grogged earthenware. The inner surface covered in a gorgeous alternating amber and treacle slip glaze, which has been lightly 'combed' to great effect.
This is an early piece dating to around the late 1920's - early 1930's. Very much produced in the country tradition of early English slipware pottery.
15 cms diameter.
The piece is crisply impressed to the underside with a tiny seal for Bernard Leach - widely considered the 'Father of British Studio Pottery' and without doubt the most influential artist-potter of the 20th Century.
For a similar example, please see The Tate Gallery St.Ives, permanent collection, ref number: T12063.
