Art Deco Coffee Set, Pirkenhammer, Czechoslovakia
This is an exquisite Czechoslovakian Coffee Set from the Art Deco era. The Pirkenhammer ceramics factory dates back to 1803. In 1918 it became part of a Czech co-operative of ceramics manufacturers called first OPIAG, then renamed in 1920 as EPIAG. The Coffee Set consists of a coffee pot, cream jug, sugar bowl and six coffee cans with saucers. There is a dark gold rim with leaf and berry decoration around the top, then a deep yellow band with a lighter gold fringe going into a white band with gold line decoration. The handles are white with gold line decoration and the rims are gold.
The coffee pot has the Pirkenhammer mark which dates it accurately to the period 1918-38. The other pieces have the EPIAG Royal mark which is less precise but dates them from around 1930 to 1950. Given the style of the pieces and the fact that they all match the coffee pot, it is likely that the whole set dates to the late 1930s.
Condition is generally very good with no cracks or chips to any of the pieces with the exception of a miniscule nibble out of the inside rim of the coffee pot lid. Needless to say this doesn't effect the look or functionality of the Coffee Set in any way. Please make sure to view all the photos.
The coffee pot is 17cm high and 15.5cm across from spout to handle. The cream jug is 7.8cm high and 9.5cm across from spout to handle. The sugar bowl is 4.5cm high and 8.7cm in diameter. The coffee cans are 5.1cm high and 4.9cm in diameter (not including handle). The saucers are 2.2cm deep and 10.9cm in diameter.
