A Pretty Mid 19thC Canopied Ash Crib
The lightweight ash crib or non-rocking cradle with railed sides and rather unusual bentwood canopy on square supports and shaped slatted base with tapering legs, the whole with acorn finials and surviving in original condition from the middle of the nineteenth century.
The crib is in good condition with the ash of pleasing golden colour and patination and it can still be used today. The whole does have some movement but it is perfectly safe for infants and there are no repairs or cracks. There are some very small areas of old worm. On request we can provide a custom fit mattress that fits the crib for use.
There are very few examples like this in that the canopy is all enveloping and made from bentwood, in fact we can’t find another like it. Its construction would have been difficult and time consuming and was possibly made by a skilled father for his child, meaning it is possibly unique. The crib can still be used in the same way today though the presence of a piece such as this also serves to highlight what is absent.
A very pretty and sculptural provincial example in good condition and one that can still be used today.
