1860s Staffordshire 2 Figures Children w/ Large Sheep
#AD229 Victorian Staffordshire Figures:
SOLD
A very fine and rare pair of 19th century Victorian Staffordshire figures of children (Royal children? Queen Victorian & Albert's children?) posing with 2 large and rather fantastical looking sheep. They are beautifully rendered and modeled in hand decorated and painted polychrome.
Staffordshire Figures were a cultural phenomenon, as much as a collectible pottery genre. To us, they impart statements on class, rural life, pop culture, authors, royalty and literary stars, politicians, workers, rural folks, occupations and the early movers and shakers. They are early British folk art at its best.
The children in these figures wear clothing in high Victorian fashion. The boy is in a Scottish highlanders outfi with kilt, garters and a plume hat. The girl wears a flowered dress, deep cobalt blue jacket and a lush plumed hat. They convey royalty, wealth and means. The colours are rich and the sheep are very thick in their granulated pottery "wool." The sheep convey great character and attitude.
This pair was found recently in Exeter, Devon, England. There are no chips, cracks or repairs and both pieces are in beautiful condition. There is some minor loss of some overglaze paint on their clothing, as seen in photo, which could be easily touched up, we'll leave that to you.
There is the very fine age overall crazing for 160 years of age. There is the usual pottery factory irregularities and specks of old Staffordshire pottery factory soot on rim, but these are the things that we love in these early figures. Click images to see the wonderful condition in close up views.
July 2020: Ready for Shipping.
Size: Each 8" in height and 6" wide (2) ——We have a 100% approval policy. For any questions, email Debra at the contact box below. Thank you, ~debra
