1860's Red Riding Hood Staffordshire Figure & Wolf
#AD199 Victorian Staffordshire Figure:
A quite stunning c. 1860's mid Victorian Staffordshire Flatback Spill Vase featuring the wonderful fairytale character Red Riding Hood and the wolf. A mid century Victorian flatback piece meant for the mantel to collect ashes, called a spill vase, see info below. This old and original piece is beautiful and very clean.
The condition is very bright and commanding. There are some slight firing imperfections on bottom rim, as most of these figures have. Very minor paint loss, and no chips, cracks or repairs. Nice brocage. She' came right out of a house in Newton Abbot, Devon, England. See 2 other pieces found with this, a Staffordshire hunter flatback figure with his gun, dog and dead pheasant, and a fisherman and woman flatback figure.
A spill vase is a small cylindrical vase that contained small tapers, wood splints, and spills for transferring fire from one location to another. For example, one might light their pipe or a candle from the lit fire in a fireplace and want to move the fire across the room. An actual "Spill" is made from very tightly rolled paper made into tapers or thin wooden sticks. Spill vessels are made of metals, wood, iron, porcelain, pottery, brass and glass.
This is a wonderful decorative Staffordshire spill vase with a fairy tale scene for the mantel. IShe has a beautiful face and the other figure we assume to be the wolf, although he also appears as a friendly dog.
It is in wonderful condition, considering it's designated purpose and age of about 160 years. It is a large piece, 10.25 inches tall and 6 inches wide. She has bright hand painted polychrome colors of orange, red, greens, browns and black. A beautiful English pottery piece and truly the nicest condition Staffordshire figure we have had, a real beauty!
