WWI Oil Capt. K. B. MacKenzie Seaforth Highlanders Portrait Oil Canvas %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are delighted to offer for sale this superb WWI bust portrait oil on canvas of Captain Keith Bethune MacKenzie of the 2nd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders, who was sadly killed in action during the first battles of Ypres, when attached to the 1st Battalion The Gordon Highlanders, 8th Brigade, 3rd Division B.E.F. at Hooge, near Ypres on 12th November 1914, aged 34. He was killed instantly by a shell. We will supply with the portrait a file of information that we have gleaned about this gallant soldier and his service in the British army. He is in dress uniform and the plaid he is wearing on his left shoulder is in the MacKenzie tartan. Captain MacKenzie is sporting a full moustache, typical of many men of the period. The painting was catalogued as by Arthur Foord Hughes 1854-1934, the son of Arthur Hughes 1832-1915, but as it is unsigned, we cannot confirm this and the majority of his paintings were watercolours, with a few Pre-Raphaelite in subject matter, some figure studies and the remainder landscapes.

The regiment of the Seaforth Highlanders was created in 1881 through the amalgamation of the 72nd (Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders) Regiment of Foot and the 78th (Highlanders) (Ross-shire Buffs) Regiment of Foot – which became the 1st and 2nd battalions of the new regiment – and was part of the Childers Reforms of the British Army. It was named after Kenneth Mackenzie, 1st Earl of Seaforth and his cousin Francis Mackenzie,

Hooge is a small village on the Bellewaerde Ridge, about 4 kilometres east of Ypres in the Flemish province of West Flanders in Belgium. Hooge and the nearby locations of Bellewaerde and Zillebeke were merged into Ypres in 1976. The economy of Hooge is dominated by tourism and agriculture. Tourists are attracted by the World War I battlefields as well as Bellewaerde, the oldest operating theme park in Belgium.

In World War I, the village belonged to one of the easternmost sectors of the Ypres Salient, which made it the site of intense and sustained fighting between German and Allied forces. From 1914 the front line of the Salient ran through the Hooge area and there was almost constant fighting in the area over the next three years, during which the village and the Château de Hooge (see below) were totally destroyed. Even during times of relative quiet on this part of the Western Front, the average casualty rate for the British and Commonwealth forces was around 300 per day
During the First Battle of Ypres (19 October – 22 November 1914), when the Allies captured the town of Ypres from the Germans, the Château de Hooge was used by the 1st and 2nd Divisions for their joint headquarters. By the end of the battle in November 1914 the Germans had been driven back, but the front line of the Salient now ran around Hooge.

Keith Bethune Mackenzie was born in Shanghai, China, on 1st December 1879. The son of James and Jane Bethune MacKenzie. His father was a civil engineer and his mother was a Canadian national and, in the 1891 Census, Keith was with her in Edinburgh, aged 11. He attended Tain Royal Academy in Tain from 1891-92, with his brother Eric and sister. From 1892-96, Keith attended Malvern College as a day boy. His parents home was Daresbury, Priory Road, Great Malvern, latterly Woodham House, Horsell, Woking, where his father died on 4th February, 1916, prior to the death of Keith's younger brother Eric. (Eric Bethune MacKenzie was a Major in the Royal Field Artillery, commanding the 29th Battery, when he was killed when, during a bombardment, the dugout in which he was sleeping collapsed on 8th July 1916. He is buried at Carnoy Military Cemetery.)

Keith joined The Seaforth Highlands from the Militia in 1901 as a 2nd Lieutenant, having seen action in the South African War 1900-02. He was promoted Lieutenant in 1904 and Captain ion 3rd June, 1911. He received the Queen's Medal with 5 clasps and, in May 1907, the Order of La Maison Ernestine was conferred upon him for his part in the South African War, being presented by H.R.H. the Duke of Albany, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. (Both these medals appear in the photograph from the Tain Museum and Malvern College.)

On 22nd January, 1912, he married Louise Caroline, elder daughter of the late J. M. Scott, of Craigholme, Tipperlinn Road, Edinburgh in St. Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh. At the time of his death, his widow was residing at 14 Paultons Square, Chelsea. Probate was awarded to his widow on 4th June, 1915 - effects £250.

Keith has no known grave, but is commemorated on the Ypres Memorial, Menin Gate, on the Tain War Memorial and on the Malvern Commemoration at the Priory Church of St. Mary and St. Michael, Malvern. There is also a short biography that appeared after his death in De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour.
