William Casley Ex.1891-1912 Watercolour Lobstermen
We are very pleased to offer for auction this lovely and finely executed watercolour by the artist WILLIAM CASLEY, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a view of a group of lobster fishermen hauling in a string of lobster pots. The sea is rough and they are standing on the rocky edge of a cove with a pebble beach. There are some pots in the foreground, attached to a douple of rusty anchors.
WILLIAM CASLEY, lived at The Lizard in Cornwall until 1912, when he is listed as living in Liverpool. There is an artist called Leonard Casley, who was living at Pentreath, The Lizard, Cornwall and exhibiting in the 20s and 30s, who may have been his son.
WILLIAM CASLEY exhibited three paintings at the Royal Institute for Painters in Watercolour and three paintings at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. His biographical details are available in The Dictionary of British Artists and The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters.
Auction results for works by this artist can be found at artprice (118 listings), findartinfo (26), arcadja (10), and artnet (8). A 36" x 19" watercolour of the Cornish coast by this artist achieved £1,200 at David Lay in 2006.
The painting has been recently mounted with washlines to complement and is framed in a 5/8" gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
