William Bond 1833-1926 Oil on Board Rocky Seascape
We are delighted to offer for sale this dramatic seascape oil on board by the very well known and listed artist WILLIAM JOSEPH J. C. BOND, who has signed the painting across the lower left hand corner W.J.J.C. Bond and dated it 1899. The painting depicts the waves crashing on a rocky coast, with the strata of the rocks clearly visible and a small rock pool in the central foreground.
WILLIAM JOSEPH J.C. BOND, 1833-1926 live in Caernarvon, where he was apprenticed to Thomas Griffiths a local art dealer and restorer. He was a landscape and marine painter in oil and watercolour and painted mainly scenes in Cheshire, Wales and Anglesey, although he had visited Antwerp and there are some paintings of that location. He moved to Liverpool, to Central Chambers, South Castle Street, and was elected an Associate Member of the Liverpool Academy of Arts in 1856 and a full Member in 1859.
It is though the the J.C. in his initials stand for Julius Caesar, but we cannot confirm this. However, he was know as 'Alphabet' Bond, for obvious reasons.
He was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites in the 1850s, but his later works show the greater influence of Turner. He worked mainly for patrons in the North of England. He died in Knotty Ash, Liverpool in 1926.
He was a prolific artist and his auction results may be found at artprice (245 listings), artnet (190), Findartinfo (127) and arcadja (120). His paintings achieve high prices and are much sought after.
Biographical information may be found at the following sources, The Dictionary of British Artists (Collector's Club) The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant Waters, Painters in the Northern counties of England and Wales by Professor Dennis Child and The Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists by H. Mallalieu. There is also a wealth of information and images of his work available of google.
The painting is newly framed in a 2 3/4" gilt frame and is ready to hang.
