17th century Italian painting, Amnon and Tamar
Emilian school of the 17th century. Oil on canvas artwork of extraordinary pictorial quality depicting a rare biblical subject, Amnon and Tamar, a story of love and hate between the sons of King David. The Bible tells us that Tamar was so beautiful that her brother Amnon fell in love with her. He pretended to be ill and asked his father to call her so that she could bring him some pancakes made with his own hands. Once they were alone, Amnon came forward and, when the young woman refused, raped her. After having satisfied his appetites, Amnon began to feel great hatred for his sister and had her thrown out, perhaps because she had resisted, or perhaps because she was the living accusation of the infamy he had committed. Tamar runs away in despair and tells everything to another brother, Absalom, who will avenge his sister by killing Amnon a few years later. Work of notable pictorial quality that takes as its model a composition by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri known as Guercino (1591-1666). On the back there is an ancient sealing wax from the Parma Academy (see photo) and a pen reference that would attribute it to Guercino's nephew and student, Benedetto Gennari (1633-1715), lacking authentication. 20th century frame in carved and ebonized wood, with some signs of aging. Painting already restored with relining and replacement of the frame. It has several color drops (see photo), overall in good condition. Sight size H 112 x W 147 cm.
