19th Century Spanish Card players oil painting %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Two men are playing cards under a pergola on a terrace in an arid mountainous country. The landscape and the costume of the two men identify the setting of this painting as the territory inland of Málaga. The artist is presently unidentified, but they have signed the painting with their initials FB and dated it ’62.

The style of the painting, and the meticulous treatment of the costume details – the laced moccasins and animal pelt leggings –recall the work of Bernardo Ferrándizy Bádenes(1835–85). Ferrandiz was born in Valencia and studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos de Valencia, but he made Málaga his home. Much of his painting is an affectionate tribute to the people of Málaga with narrative subjects showcasing the local costume and there are clear similarities with our painting. A wineskinmaker by Ferrandiz, signed and dated 1866 (Christie’s, 23rd September 2004, lot 110 sold £1,554)shows the subject wearing the same style of headgear as the man on the right in our painting, and a similar swagger cloak to the man on the left.

It is tempting to suggest that our artist was influenced by Ferrándiz. If the date is 1862 then they were either independently interested in the same genre or responding to the work of Ferrándiz when it was very new indeed. Ferrándiz was in Valencia until 1859 when his painting of a dying beggar titled Viaticumwon him a prize to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His work would have been known more widely. He travelled in North Africa and Italy during that time and exhibited at the Salon in Paris and at the Exposiciones de Bellas Artes in Madrid. His paintings of Las Primicias ‘the exclusive’, showing a couple excitedly reading a press cutting, and El Charlatánpolítico or ‘the political windbag’ (Prado Museum, Madrid) won second prize medal there in 1862 and 1867 respectively. His painting Tribunal de les Aigües de Valencia, ‘the Water Court of Valencia’ (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux) was acquired for Emperor Napoleon III.

Ferrándizremained in Paris until 1868 when he and his wife moved to Málaga was following his appointment as Professor of Colour and Composition at the Escuela de Bella Artes de San Telmo in Málaga. The dating of our painting and its use of the elements typically identified with Ferrándiz, the meticulous depiction of elaborate regional dress and still-life details, such as the blue and white ware jug on the table, might suggest that his work had an immediate and powerful influence on his fellow painters. Equally, there are significant differences between our painting and Ferrándiz’s more typical work. ¬There is no hint of the sentimental or picturesque quality more usual in his paintings. Rather the mood is uncompromisingly naturalistic even harsh, like the mountain landscape that commands the background of the painting. This might suggest that there was already at least one artist in the region who appreciated the local people, their dress and lives, and the landscape itself as an inspiring subject for paintings.
