Whitehurst Derby Hook and Spike Clock
Description
This is a fine and rare hook and spike wall antique clock , sometimes known as pantry antique clocks , by the eminent clockmaking dynasty of Whitehurst , Derby and will date circa 1800 -1820.
Such clocks were made from circa 1780 by John Whitehurst (1) and continued to me made up the the middle of the 19th century by various descendants . The clock was probably made by John Whitehurst (11).
It is well worth spending a little time researching this family ,particularly John (1) who was one of the countries leading scientists and a fellow of the lunar society. He is known as the father of modern geology and was one the the men who helped Britain to the forefront of the industrial revolution. He really was quite a remarkable man.
This particular clock has an 8 inch circular brass engraved dial which is silvered and is signed WHITEHURST DERBY and it retains its original spade hands,
The 8 day duration three train weight driven movement quarter chimes each quarter (ting tang) on two bells mounted above each other starting with 2 strikes at quarter past , 4 and half past , 6 at quarter to and 8 on the hour which is followed by the actual number of hours striking on a seperate bell. The movement has been professionally serviced and is in perfect working order. This clock is very rare indeed and should not be confused with the far more common 30 hour alarm versions or the standard two train striking antique clocks.
The original pendulum , stamped JWD and weights (one stamped W ) are present as are the original weights and counterweights.
All in all this clock has survived in remarkable original condition and is ready to hang straight on the wall.It will prove to be a very attractive and practical clock for many generations to come.
Should the buyer require the dial re silvering or cleaning back to brass this will be completed free of charge at the buyers request.
Please note the brass sheet dust cover is an old replacement and the hook has been repaired in the past.
At the full asking price I will deliver , set up and provide a full 12 months guarantee in England ,Wales and the Scottish Lowlands
Any lesser offers accepted will be considered a trade sale with the clock sold as described with shipping costs the responsibility of the buyer.
I will ship this clock world wide.
