Watercolour Portraits King George V & Queen Mary
VERY RARE FIND
These are an IMPORTANT pair of wonderfully painted watercolours of King Georve V and Queen Mary, signed and dated 1924, by the Scottish artist Robert Smith Forrest.

Robert Smith Forrest was born on 26th March 1871 in Edinburgh and studied there. From 1890 until 1905, Robert was in partnership with his brother William in R. S. & W. Forrest's Brandon Studio, a photographic studio at Brandon Terrace, Edinburgh. From 1906-1908, he traded alone as a Photo Artist & Photographer. He lived at Raeburn House, 32 York Place, Edinburgh until 1942, the house which Sir Henry Raeburn built and painted in from 1798-1809.

In census records, he was a Photographic Artist (employed) in 1891. In 1897, he married another Photo Artist, Edith Isabelle McRitchie and they had 2 sons and a daughter. By 1901, he was living at 5 Park Place, Trinity, Edinburgh and was a Photographer (Employer). By 1928, he was described as a Portrait Artist and this continued until his death on 9th February 1943.

According to family history, it is said that Forrest worked for the Royal Family at Holyrood. What is fact, is that he was commissioned to paint a watercolour portrait of King George V & Queen Mary in 1911 to hang in the Edinburgh City Chambers, to commemorate their visit to Edinburgh after the Coronation in 1911.

He is listed in The Dictionary of Scottish Painters and The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club). He ehxibited 6 paintings at the Royal Scottish Academy and 4 at the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society. He turned to etching in later life, mostly scenes of Edinburgh Streets and famous buildings.

The paintings have been newly mounted in two tone acid free mountboard and newly framed in ornate silver gilt frames to complement. They will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
