Walter Henry Sweet Watercolour St. Michael's Mount
We are delighted to offer for sale this large, delightful watercolour by the famous and well listed Devon artist WALTER HENRY SWEET, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a view of St. Michael's Mount on a bright and breezy day. St. Michael's Mount is situated in Mount's Bay and linked to the town of Marazion in Cornwall.
Walter Sweet did not exhibit his work nationally, as he is not listed in the reference books, but he has a biography in Jeremy Wood's book 'Hidden Talents'. To quote Jeremy Wood, 'Walter Sweet was a painter in watercolour of Devon and Cornish landscapes, cottages and harbour scenes. He was born on 11th April, 1889 and studied at the Exeter School of Art under the guidance of his friend John Shapland. He worked locally and exhibited work at the Devon and Exeter Annual Exhibition at Elands Art Gallery in the 1900s. At the outbreak of the First World War, Walter Sweet joined the Devonshire Regiment and saw active service abroad. After the War, he moved to Dundee, Scotland, and was employed by James Valentine and Sons as a commercial illustrator. He married Jessie Lilian Hatherley (1891-1974) in 1915, and had two sons, one of whom studied at the Dundee College of Art. Walter Sweet died in St. Clements, Dundee on 12th February 1943 at the age of 53. Walter Sweet's watercolours are decorative and the popular West Country subject matter has made them increasingly collectable.' In fact, one of his works is illustrated in this book on Page 148.
Walter Sweet's auction results are listed on findartinfo.com (87 results), artprice.com (201 results) and arcadja.com (54). His auction sales are also listed in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market in 2004 and 2007, the only two copies that we have and one of his watercolour's reached £1.156 in 2004. Several of his large watercolours have achieved sales in excess of £1,000 and they regularly figure in the upper hundreds.
The painting has been newly double mounted in cream acid free mountboard and is also newly framed in a 1 1/4" gadrooned edged dull silver frame that suits it very well. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang and would make a beautiful addition to a W. H. Sweet collection.
Image size: 13 1/2" x 9 1/2" - 34.25cm x 24.15cm
Frame size: 21 3/8" x 17 3/4" - 54.25cm x 45cm
Medium: Watecolours
Condition: Excellent in all respects.
