Violet Ada Bartlett Australian 1920s Bird Painting
Violet Ada Bartlett (Australian c.1880 - 1976)
(active c. 1919 - 1929)
Offered here is a rare, original watercolour on board depicting 11 beautiful, native Australian birds.
Signed to the lower left 'Artah'.
The thick watercolour board has been carefully cut into the form of a boomerang, with the mount beautifully hand-embellished with the slogan - "A Boomerang Always Comes Back".
An incredibly charming painting, absolutely 'right' and oozing with 1920's - 1930's style typical of the interwar period.
In an old / period frame, which the artwork has obviously been sealed in for some considerable time, with an old label verso for James Pollock, 47 Donegall Place, Belfast.
A friend of anthropologist and sketcher Olive Pink, Bartlett was part of the vibrant Sydney art scene in the years between the wars. An accomplished artist, her speciality was watercolours of native Australian birds. Violet Bartlett exhibited with the Royal Art Society of NSW in 1901 and was active in Sydney's eastern suburbs in the 1920's.
Bartlett's work is now in the ascendency and is rightly collected.
Her 'boomerang' form paintings, of which this is a really lovely example, are particularly rare and hard to find.
