Description:
This is a fine quality antique English George V pair of watercolours paintings, by the Royal Academy Artist, Henry Charles Fox, of a rural scene depicting sheep herding, in their original gilt frames, circa 1915, in good original condition. The pair of pictures depict a peaceful midday autumnal scene showing a shepherd and their dog with a herd of sheep down a country lane. The trees are bare of leaves emphasising their structure and height. The colours blend well together showing bracken and felled logs in the foreground, with hazy mist in the distance and a barn in need of repair. Henry Charles Fox has mastered the exact way sheep all stand and stare a very relaxing scene with no urgency to hurry along. The pair of watercolours have the skill to draw you in with its range of rustic / pastel colour hues and textures. They are signed and dated in the bottom right corner framed in their original mounted gilt frame, protected by glass, which are in good condition.

Artist - History:
Henry Charles Fox was born in London on 1 March 1855 to a merchant banker and died in 1929 in Horsham, Sussex, having lived most of his life in Kingston-upon-Thames. He travelled widely across the south of England, observing and painting in Surrey, Berkshire, Kent and Sussex. During his lifetime English rural life changed out of all recognition, but Fox tried to capture the idealised dream of the perfect English countryside as it was during Victorian times with his delicate watercolour landscapes. His paintings were many and provide us with a beautiful record of life as it was at the turn of the century.

A prolific artist, he became well-established by the early 1900s and had exhibited over 20 paintings at the Royal Academy by 1913, having had his first one accepted in 1880 at the age of 25. His reputation spread throughout the provinces and he exhibited in such prestigious galleries and exhibitions as the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Hibernian Academy, Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and Manchester City Art Gallery. A well-respected artist, Henry Charles Fox was elected a full member of the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) in 1889. The following year he exhibited a total of 113 paintings there. He died in 1929.
