This is a charming Victorian Stoneware Pepper Shaker with a Sterling Silver top. The body is sprigged with scenes of men drinking whilst hunting dogs chase around the body beneath them. The silver shaker top is perforated in a six pointed star pattern.

The stoneware body was made by Doulton at their famous Lambeth works in London as part of their popular Hunting Ware range. The silver lid was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Saunders & Shepherd and dates the pepper shaker to 1889. Doulton commissioned rims and caps from many different silversmiths over the years.

Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the ceramic, no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 135 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pepper shaker stands 5.6cm / 2.2ins high and is 4cm / 1.6ins in diameter at its widest point. The lid by itself weighs in at 7.0g / 0.25oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the shaker weighs 66.3g / 2.3oz.

The underside of the base has the Doulton Lambeth stamp. The hallmarks, on the rim of the silver lid, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter p for 1889 and the CS FS makers' mark for Cornelius Saunders and Frank Shepherd of Saunders & Shepherd.
