Victorian Silver Basket, Emanuel Emanuel, 1885
Here we have a beautiful late Victorian Sterling Silver Basket with a Swing Handle. The basket sits on a low pedestal base that is ten sided with line decorated sides and an engraved top. The body has high, part fluted, sides with pointed ends and an exquisite band of foliate engraving against a textured background running around the top. There is a blank octagonal cartouche on each side and the handle has line decoration to match the base.
This was probably originally used for sugar cubes but today it can hold anything you wish such as nuts, snacks, sauces for the dining table, pot pourri or even an arrangement of small flowers.
The basket was made by silversmith Emanuel Emanuel and assayed in London in 1885. Emanuel was actually based in Portsmouth, Hampshire on England's south coast and was registered as a goldsmith, jeweller and silversmith. He was active between around 1870 and 1910 but silver pieces by him are rare and it is likely that his primary interest was antique jewellery.
Condition is very good with just one tiny ding very low down on the body on one side plus the superficial surface wear that you have to expect after over 135 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The basket measures 14cm / 5.5ins from end to end, 6.7cm / 2.6ins across the body and stands 16cm / 6.3ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 188.1g / 6.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the side of the body and on the handle are a little rubbed but still okay to read. The full set on the body shows the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Queen Victoria duty mark, the date letter K for 1885 and the EE in a shield makers' mark for Emanuel Emanuel. The partial set on the handle has the lion passant, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the EE in a shield makers' mark.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the basket.
