Art Nouveau Silver Topped Glass Basket, 1909
Here we have an attractive and unusual Art Nouveau Cut Glass Basket with a Sterling Silver Lid and Handle from the Edwardian era. The body of the basket is diamond cut and has a smooth flat base. The silver lid is pierced in an Art Nouveau floral design and the two halves lift up separately. The swing handle is formed of two bands joined in the centre by a spherical silver bead.
This would make an elegant addition to any dressing table or desk for storing small items.
The basket was made in London by Corke Brothers & Co and dates to 1909. Despite the name, Corke Brothers & Co was a partnership of William Corke and the brothers Arthur and Harry Apthorp. Founded in 1899, they specialised in small silver items, primarily for personal use including silver mounted glassware. Around 1917 they changed their name to Corke & Apthorp and remained in business until the late 1920s.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, no dings, dents or damage to the silver and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after 115 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The basket is 6.4cm / 2.5ins long, 5cm / 1.9ins across and 6.7cm / 2.6ins high with the handle in the upright position. It weighs in at 91.6g / 3.2oz.
The hallmarks, on the side of the silver collar, are a little rubbed but can still be deciphered. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter o for 1909 and the distinctive C B & Co makers' mark for Corke Brothers & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
