This is a Sterling Silver Victorian Reproduction of a George II fruit or cake basket with a draped ribbon and lattice work body with two panels that depict George II in repoussé work. It has two solid handles and stands on four feet.There is a small amount of damage to the base of the fret work on one side, only noticable on close inspection, hence this is priced accordingly.
The base is marked with typical Hanau marks but I cannot identify the maker. The base is also fully hallmarked for a London import 1896, with the sponsors mark for William Moehring who was a well known importer of Hanau Silver between 1892 – 1903.
Much of the Hanau silver produced was in lower grade silver and sold as the genuine article, the Sterling Silver pieces were manufactured for the British and American import markets and as with Moehring were sold as reproductions.
The basket is 11” long from handle to handle, without handles it is 8” long.
Width is 5¼” .
Height is 4”.
Weight is 400 grams.
