Victorian Part-Glazed Mahogany Library Bookcase
This lovely antique bookcase dates from approx. 1860. It is constructed from mostly solid mahogany (probably with pine sides). It consists of a glazed top section with two doors that open to reveal a bookcase at either side, each with three removable wooden shelves. The bottom section has a hidden drawer over two wooden doors that open to reveal a cupboard at either side, each with a removable wooden shelf inside. There are decorative mouldings at either side of the base section at the front and decorative panelling to the tops of the cupboard doors. The piece is supported on a plinth base. The doors all retain their locks, and one original key is present which works all the locks. The piece splits in two - the top section sits loose on the base section.
Condition Overall this handsome piece is in usuable condition, but does have some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing, knocking and wear to the woodwork as might be expected from an antique country piece, and there is some fading and discolouration, particularly to the base. There are some signs of old repair. There is some wood shrinkage cracking to the panelling at the tops of the doors. The beading at the back of the bottom of the top section on the left-hand side is a little loose and has some wood loss. The escutcheons are missing from the bottom section doors. Two of the shelves in the top section are split in two horizontally along the join lines. The top of the botom section is heavily scratched with some wood loss - this is not visible when the top section is in place. There is some old woodworm damage, primarily to the pine sides - this is not active, but has been retreated as a precaution.
