Here is a stunning quality antique burr walnut and leather-sewing table, comprising a leather desk top, with a sewing box below, circa 1850, in excellent condition. The worktable was designed to be freestanding in the centre of a room, as it features a polished back including a dummy drawer. The top comprises of a good quality black inset leather with good tool scribing to the perimeter. An elegant carved shaped splayed gallery sits around the leather above a moulded top. Below, there is single working mahogany lined drawer, flanked by elegant carved corbels. The drawer is constructed with hand dovetail joints it also features the original knobs. Further below, is a very pretty pullout-sewing box upholstered in a silk brocade material. The table stands on two elegant turned legs with egg and dart carved balls as the base above four floral carved cabriole legs. A single flat pad stretcher for strength unites the legs. The legs stand on the original brass castors.
This worktable features a rich burr walnut brown & yellow colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look great in a variety of rooms from the hallway, to the living or dining room or bedroom. This truly is a very beautiful item with quality construction and is original throughout. Provenance
Although not stamped, the design of this worktable is attributable to the well renowned London cabinetmakers, Holland & Sons. This worktable was most likely made by Holland & Sons as not all of their antique furniture was stamped. The company was founded in 1803 by William Holland and by the mid 1800’s, Holland and Son were one of the main competitions to the cabinetmakers, Gillows of Lancaster, the most prominent cabinetmakers in England during the 18th and 19th century. Holland & Sons went on to supply fine furniture to the Royal family, including the Queen, as well as the British Museum and houses of parliament.
Condition Report
This worktable is in excellent condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The leather is clean, free from scratches, stains or any other damage. The surrounding gallery is firm. The worktable drawer features the original turned knobs. The pullout sewing box upholstery lining and interior is clean and intact. The table features the original polish, which is what gives the table such a stunning patination. This worktable is solid in joint and ready to use. All in all, this item is in excellent condition considering its age.
