Very early 18th century Francis Gregg Table clock %%alt5%%
Being able to offer this fine Francis Gregg ebony table antique clock for sale is an absolute delight.
This Very early 18th century clock is a fantastic example of craftsmanship of English clock makers of that time.
Francis Gregg was born in circa 1677 and apprenticed to John Clowes in 1691 through to 1698. He is recorded working in Russell Street in 1711 and St. James's 1714-29. He was recorded as being bankrupt twice once in 1729 then again in 1749.
The National Trust property in Salisbury has a remarkably similar clock in its collection.
This George I ebony table clock with pull quarter repeat. The 6 x 8” break arch brass dial with silvered chapter ring, matted centre, calendar aperture and false pendulum aperture with silvered cartouche signed FRA:GREGG AT ST JAMES’S.
With Rise and fall regulation to the arch. Blued steel hands. The substantial five pillar movement with verge escapement and pull quarter repeat. The backplate with finely engraved foliage.
The ebony case has an inverted bell top and heavy brass carrying handle, finely pierced ebony sound frets to the doors and glazed panels to the sides. Fine mouldings surround the glazed aperture, and the front door has a cast keyhole escutcheon.
The substantial 5 pillar 8 day duration single fusee movement is of magnificent quality. Having been fully restored it runs as it would the day it was made. The back plate of the movement that can be seen in the pictures has some of the best engraving that I have seen over the years. Although the clock is a single fusee time piece the pull cord to the side allows the clock to quarter repeat the time. This is a fantastic feature please contact me to see the video for a demonstration.
When restored the back plate has been lacquered to maintain that clean crisp look allowing the engraving to stand out as it should. The detail and thought that went into the small details of this clock is wonderful please see the close-up picture of the false pendulum in the dial and note the engraving (A face), even the engraving on the pendulum bob is a match of the bird at the bottom of the back plate.
This clock was purchased by us from a private collector who owned it for 10+ years with them also purchasing it from a private collector with that person owning it for around the same amount of time.
Overall I would say the condition of this piece is fantastic being in genuine original order. As can be seen in the photos there is general signs of age that you would expect from a clock of this age but no major knocks, dents or scratches. The size of the case is wonderfull being only 43 cm high with the handle up and 39 cm with the handle down, 24cm wide and 17cm deep
I welcome any interested parties to view the clock to appreciate just how wonderful this clock truly is, it truly is much nicer in the flesh and looks superb .
