Verge Bracket Clock with Alarm - Chater and Son, bracket clock verge %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a very fine and impressive gilt brass mounted verge bracket antique clock by Chater and Son , London circa 1760 .
William Chater (1) was apprenticed in 1718 and made a member of the Clockmakers Company in 1726 and died in 1762. He took his son , also named William , as apprentice in 1746 and was made free in 1753 , himself dying in 1785. Both carried on a business as Chater and Son from 1753 to 1784
The double fusee movement retains its original verge escapement and has a beautifully engraved back plate depicting scrolls and foliage It strikes the hours on a bell and strike silent facility in the arch.
Unusually it has a pull cord driven alarm facility.
The inverted bell top case has gilt brass edged doors and edges

Worthy of note are the original pierced and engraved brass sound fretts to the sides and front and rear doors. They are beautifully made and in remarkable condition when you consider how delicate they are. The extensive use of applied gilt brass on all sides indicate that the clock was made to be displayed in the centre of a room or in front of a mirror . It is a very impressive item indeed .

The 7 1/2 inch arched silvered brass chapter ring and spandrel dial has a beautifully matted centre with false pendulum aperture and the makers name signed on the chapter ring . The strike silent dial is in the arch and a calendar aperture above 6 o'clock . The pierced steel hands are original. The clock is in perfect working order.
The dial is in excellent condition with a lovely patina . It can be resilvered at the buyers request if required but many people will prefer it just as it is.
As can be seen from the images this clock is in excellent condition throughout and is ready to be displayed in the home. The ebonised case has a high shine and is in superb condition . It will delight the most discerning client.
This is an impressive clock being is 22 inches tall (handle up). The width is 13 1/2 inches and the depth 7 1/2.
