Theodore Hines Attrib. Oil Landscape Woman Punting
We are offering for sale this large, Landscape Oil Painting which is unsigned, but attibuted to the artist Theodore Hines, whose palette and style it closely resembles. Normally this artist entitled his canvases verso, but, as the painting is relined, this cannot be seen. There are some faint markings in the lower right hand corner, which may have been a signature, but it is illegible, hence we are only attributing it to Theo Hines. However, his paintings very often contain water, silver birches, foxgloves and punts and we have seen several of his painting in similar vein. He also used a lot of canvases in this 32" x 18" size.
The painting depicts a village woman, with a scarf over her hair and an apron over her dress, punting down a river, with wooded banks, including a cluster of silver birches and wild flowers, including foxgloves. There is a break in the trees, showing distant hills and the bright sky is reflected in the water.
Theodore Hines was born in 1859 in South London and both he and his brother Frederick, born 1853, became full time artists. He signed his painting Theo Hines in a very florid style. In 1871, according to the Census, he and his brother were living with their parents in Southwark. By 1881 he was lodging in St. Pancras and was listed as an artist. We can find no Census listing for him in 1891, but by 1901, he was living at 18 Orde Hall Street, Holborn aged 41, listed as an Artist Landscape Painter with his wife Agnes, born 1862, his son John P. Hines b.1884, and daughters Phoebe Alice b. 1886, and Dorothy M. E. b. 1888. We can find no further information about him, including the date of his death.
He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club) and the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood. His London exhibition history is listed in Graves Dictionary. He exhibited 7 landscapes at the Royal Academy, 32 at Suffolk Street (now RBA), and 10 at other London exhibitions, as well as in Liverpol and Glasgow.
The painting is newly framed in a 3" gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
