This is an attractive small oil painting of a Norwegian fjord by Nils Hans Christiansen in its original gilt frame, circa 1890. Rocks and woodland fill the foreground while further in the distance a village sits on a narrow peninsular extending into the fjord with mountains forming the backdrop. Though unsigned or at least not visibly so as seen from the front without taking the picture apart, a printed paper label on the reverse attributes the work to Christiansen.

NILS HANS CHRISTIANSEN, 1850-1922, was a Danish artist, born in Esbjerg, Jutland in 1850. He worked mainly in Norway and Denmark, although it appears that he spent a considerable amount of time in the UK around the turn of the century, as he exhibited with many of the popular galleries at this time. The subject matter includes fjords, winter skating scenes, dramatic sunsets and highland scenes with stags. His paintings were very popular with the Victorian and Edwardian public and collected extensively. He was a Member of the Royal Academy of Copenhagen. He died in England in 1922.

There are 4 of his paintings in the National Collection, one in Epping Forest District Museum, one in Warwickshire Museum and one at Sidney Sussex College, University of Cambridge. His work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging up to 4,165 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork.

Condition: Oil painting has a brown mark centre right, otherwise in good antique condition. The frame which is contemporary to the painting is in good antique condition with very minor touching up of the gilding.
