T. Tayler Ireland 1875-1931 Autumnal Watercolour
We are pleased to offer for sale this large watercolour by the artist Tom TAYLER IRELAND, who has signed the painting Tayler Ireland in the lower right hand corner and entitled it 'Golden Autumn' verso. The painting depicts a misty autumnal landscape, with a small stream meandering between the trees and a duck taking flight. There are two gnarled beech trees to the right, mostly devoid of their leaves, which have formed a russet carpet beneath them. The location may well be Burnham Beeches.
TOM TAYLER IRELAND was the son of the artist Thomas Ireland RBA 1848-1903 and was born in St. Pancras, London in the last quarter of 1875. In the Census records of 1881, 1891 and 1891, Tom was living with his parents and, by 1891 his father, who was a widower. Some time after the death of his father in 1903, Tom was living at 9 Camden Studios, Camden Street, London N.W., according to the Census record of 1911, the last one available to public view. He married in 1911 and died in Barnet, Hertfordshire in 1931, at the age of 56.
Tom was a landscape painter in both oil and watercolour in a style not dissimilar to that of his father, and he specialised in misty, wooded landscapes using a similar colour palette to that of the painting we are offering. He exhibited at the principal London galleries from 1880, mainly at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and Suffolk Street.
There is one of his paintings, as oil of a wooded landscape, in the Alfred East Art Gallery and can be viewed either there or at ArtUK.org under the name of the artist.
Biographical information regarding this artist may be found in all the major artists reference books for this period and his auction results are available at artprice.com (142 listings), findartinfo.com (85), arcadja.com (51) and artnet.com (21). His larger paintings fetch several hundreds of pounds.
The painting has been newly mounted in acid free mountboard to complement, is framed in a very nice 1 1/2 inch shell and swagged gilt frame to suit and is glazed with conservation glass. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
