Silver Plate Specimen Vase, W.M.F, c.1930s/40s
This is an elegant Vintage Silver Plate Specimen Vase. The vase has a rounded square base, weighted for stability, with a gadrooned top rim. The body of the vase is slender and intended for a single flower stem. It widens out slightly towards the bottom to allow for more water.
The vase is made by the famous German firm W.M.F (Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik) and dates to around the 1930s/40s. WMF was founded in 1880 when Straub & Sohn of Geislingen merged with Ritter & Co of Esslingen. The company was quickly successful and by 1910 was the largest employer in Wurttemberg and had offices in London, Vienna and Warsaw. They were very associated with Art Nouveau / Jugendstil style in silver plate and pewter. The company is still going strong today.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no significant plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vase stands 20.5cm / 8ins high and the bases is 5.4cm / 2.1ins square. It weighs 76.8g / 2.7oz.
The base of the vase is stamped on the side (necessarily very small!) with the domed WMF mark in use during the 1930s and 1940s.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
