Set of Four Glasgow School Arts & Crafts Chairs
We have for sale a very striking Edwardian set of four oak Glasgow School arts and crafts dining chairs dating to between 1900 and 1905.
These very attractive and stylish Wylie & Lochhead of Glasgow chairs are attributed to the artist and designer Edward Archibald Taylor (EA Taylor). EA Taylor, was born in Greenock in 1874. He was an accomplished artist and antique furniture designer who studied at the Glasgow School of Art. He was a contemporary of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and was the head designer at the famed furniture manufacturer Wylie and Lochhead of Glasgow, where he worked with George Logan and John Ednie. He married Jessie M King who like Taylor was trained at the Glasgow School of Art. They moved from Glasgow to Paris where they established the Shearing Atelier art school in around 1911. They returned to Scotland in 1914 establishing summer schools in Kirkcubright and the Isle of Arran
The chairs are 42 inches (107cm) high, 17.5 inches (44.5cm) wide at the front and 18.25 inches (46.5cm) deep (Front leg to back leg). The chairs are in a very good to excellent antique condition, although there is a small loss to the decoration in the cross strut to the top of the back in one chair, see photograph 6. The chairs have been re-upholstered in a light oatmeal calico.
The price for this set of Glasgow School arts and crafts dining chairs includes delivery anywhere in mainland UK.
