Repeating Carriage Clock by Margaine
French gilded brass carriage clock in a beautifully engraved gorge case with foliate scrolls and swags with ornate carrying handle. Bevelled glass to all panels with large viewing aperture to the top giving way to a silvered lever platform escapement with ‘blued’ screws.
Fine quality eight day movement striking the hours and halves on a coiled gong, carrying the mark for Margaine to the bottom left hand corner and numbered 7645. Enamel dial with Roman numerals and original ‘blued’ steel hands signed (faintly) Howell James below the VI.
‘Watchmakers and clockmakers of the world’ by Brian Loomes lists Francois-Arsene Margaine as working in Paris (1869-1914) from Rue Beranger 22 and Rue Bondy 54. He is regarded as one of the very best carriage clock makers.
Howell James and Co. Were founded in 1819 as jewellers and silversmiths soon establishing themselves as purveyors of fine quality pieces from their premises in Regent Street. They regularly exhibited at both the London and Paris exhibitions and became holders of the Royal Warrant. The firm ceased trading in 1911.
