Regency Inlaid Mahogany Work / Sewing Cabinet
This small antique chest would originally have been a sewing or work cabinet, but would make a lovely bedside or antique jewellery chest. It is constructed from mainly solid mahogany with ebony string inlay, and dates from c.1810. The chest has a lift-up top which opens to reveal a compartmentalised interior with original blue paper lining. Beneath this are two graduated drawers with original blue paper lining (plus a false drawer front above). The chest has false matching drawer fronts to the other side. The drawers (and false drawer fronts) retain their orignal brass handles and decorative ecscutcheons. The drawers and lift-up compartment retain their locks, but please note that no keys are present. The cabinet is supported on slightly tapering legs terminating in brass castors. It has a lower shelf.
Condition Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition, with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected, and the piece is overall a little faded. There are some signs of old restoration and repair and some wood shrinkage cracking to the sides. The top has a few small dark marks. There are some signs of old woodworm, mainly to the pine drawer carcasses - this is not active but has been retreated as a precaution.
The approx. measurements are as follows
Overall - 74.5cm high, 35.5cm wide, 32cm deep (to maximums). Further images are available. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. Viewing is welcome, but please contact us before travelling as we are only open by appointment.
We can arrange delivery of both smaller items and furniture - please contact us for details and a quote. Customers are also welcome to use their own couriers if preferred.
Payment can be made by PayPal, bank transfer, cheque [UK only], and cash on collection.
