Rare Welsh Box Settle - New Quay c1840
Something very special.
A beautiful New Quay Box Settle of rare form and tidy smaller size.
At 4ft 6”” long with a gently sloping back this gorgeously comfortable settle is the sweetest thing. Of an incredibly rare form these settles are only usually found between Llangrannog and New Quay, whilst the maker is unknown they we’re certainly made in the locality in one of the coastal ship building villages. We know this as they often include rare timbers, this example includes a teak wood seat and other components - a timber traditionally used in shop building and for ships antique furniture. Also included in this settle are elm, sycamore and pine - in the true Cardiganshire mixed woods tradition.
These iconic Welsh sgiws were originally found in cottages, taverns and farmhouses of the region often in the kitchen or beside the fireplace. We have an identical example from the Dolau Inn in New Quay in our own home, this example was purchased by ourselves from a Sea Captains house in Rock Street for which it was originally made.
Ever so comfy and small enough to work in any room this is a very special example indeed. Strong and sturdy with fabulous warm and nutty colour true to age.
Length 137cm. Max length at arms 146cm. Max Height 112cm. Seat Height 43cm. Seat Depth 42cm. Max Overall depth 58cm
