Rare Regency Fiddleback Mahogany Writing Table
An extremely rare early 19th Century Regency period fiddleback mahogany writing table with adjustable writing slope bearing all the signs of the famous cabinet makers Gillows.
Very unusual in form, being constructed of the finest cuts of fiddleback mahogany, the central hinged and crossbanded leather lined adjustable writing slope over a reel-moulded frieze drawer, flanked by semi-circular ends edged with pierced brass galleries, having bow fronted frieze drawers. Raised on two waisted end supported and reeded out-splayed sabre legs with gilt brass box castors.
Mirrored to the rear with false drawers enable this fine desk to stand independently with the room / study.
The design and use of well selected timber, of which Gillows at the time had a monopoly on, along with superior cabinet making strongly relate to Gillows being the makers of this very rare regency writing table. For reference an almost identical version of this table in rosewood is currently in stock at Ronald Philips Ltd.
Offered in excellent condition with the castors and brass work having recently been refurbished and gilt.
