Rare Claude Glass (Lorraine Mirror), early Victorian
Rare early Victorian Claude Glass or Lorraine Mirror.
This sturdy (possibly metal) case is black leatherette covered, and contains one dark convex mirror and one traditional silver convex mirror with a black satin divider.
A Claude Glass, extremely popular between around 1760 and 1850s, is a slightly convex dark mirror used by artist for perspective drawing (landscape painting) by diminishing the view into the desired size.
This is a rare type with two different colour mirrors in one case.
Very good condition. No damage, just minor signs of age and wear. The white mirror has a slight yellow hue and some age-related tarnish to the reflective coating.
Unmarked. Case size 12.5cm x 9.5cm x 1.5cm.
This item is available to view at the Red House Antiques Centre in York.
Please contact, preferably by email, for shipping costs and payment options.
