Philip Callon Humphreys Oil Portrait Art Deco 1936
We are pleased to offer for sale this lovely art deco portrait by the portraitist Philip Callon Humphreys, who has signed the painting in the top left hand corner, inscribed it 'To my Friend Jean Richmond. Philip Humphreys 1935'. Presumably this is a portrait in profile of Jean Richmond, who has her blonde hair with marcel waves. She is wearing a low cut cream dress with wide straps over the shoulders. This portrait epitomises the look of the thirties.
Philip Callon Humphreys, was born in Chorlton, Lancashire on the 30th September, 1905, the son of a Music Professor. By 1911, the family had moved to London, where they were living at 85 Elms road, Clapham in London. Philip primarily painted portraits and exhibited 2 paintings in 1930, 1 at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in London and 1 at the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham.
We have managed to find 5 portraits that he painted, plus this one of Jean Richmond. They are as follows
Pamela Ward (1939) (National Collection - National Trust)
Evelyn Dawson (1928)
Mr. A. Donald Cuthbertson (1925)
Mrs. D. Cuthbertson and her Children (1935
Mary Eleanor Stoker B.A. (1928)
1 Landscape (National Collection - National Trust)
Philip was livng at 145 Elms Road Clapham in 1930 when he exhibited. He died in Wandsworth in 1986.
As he was painting in the 20th Century, many of his portraits may still be in private hands, but there are a few auction results for his work.
The painting has been newly framed in a 3 3/4" cream and bronze frame, which suits it very well. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
