Pair Of 1930s Oak Boardroom Chairs By Cabinetmaker Appleyard johnson
Johnson and Appleyard were cabinet makers with the royal patronage - by appointment to HRH the Price of Wales. They were also responsible for the fittings in the Sheffield Council Chambers of the Town Hall. In 1900 they won a gold medal at the Paris Exhibition and were in business in Sheffield from 1879 through to the 1950s. Yorkshire House, of Leopold Street,Sheffield, was originally built for the company and the stone plaque advertising their royal patronage can still be seen on the building.

The hand of a cabinetmaker can be seen in these oak chairs with bow backs, shaped rear legs, detailing to the front legs, shaping to the front of the seat and unusual cow horn stretchers. The upholstery has been replaced very professionally at some point in the life of the chairs.

These chairs would have once graced a boardroom or civic building in Sheffield and are superb examples of their work.
