......................................................
We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely pair of oil portraits which date to circa 1830-1850. The paintings are portraits of David Clifford of Bristol Customs and his wife Mary Anne. The provenance of these paintings is that they were handed down the direct family line until put into auction and the information above comes from the auction house. According to the family, they date to about 1830, although the hair style and David Clifford's clothes point us more towards c.1850. They are unsigned.
David has long side whiskers and is wearing a black jacket, fancy waistcoat, high collared shirt and black cravat. Mary Anne is seated in a red upholstered chair, has the typical hairstyle of the period, with a centre parting and wings over the ears. She is wearing a black dress with a lace tippet and has a large cameo brooch at the centre of her neckline. She is also wearing a long pendant, not shown, on a chain.
The paintings are framed in matching 2" oval gilt frames and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
MEASUREMENTS
Image size 21 7/8" x 17 1/8" - 55.55cm x 43.5cm
Frame size 25 1/2" x 21" - 64.75cm x 53.35cm
MEDIUM
Oils on canvas laid to board. David is painted on coarser canvas, whilst Mary Anne is on fine canvas.
CONDITION
Very good condition for their age. Some very fine craquelure on both paintings consistent with age. The frames are in good condition as shown, with a very slight nibble on the inner edge of the bottom of the frame on the portrait of David.
Early Victorian1830-1850.
