Massive Vintage Winchcombe Pottery Dish Ray Finch
A spectacular and rare dish or platter, of huge proportions from Winchcombe Pottery in Gloucestershire.
This low and shallow dish, of oblong form, has been press-moulded in stoneware. The decoration consists of a pair of opposing fish, brilliantly rendered in coloured glaze, over a sumptuous iron-rich ground.
The colours are magnificent, with bright cherry hues shifting through to lighter and darker freckling.
The piece is marked to the underside, with the old-style, large, angular WP seal.
I attribute this fine and impressive dish to Ray Finch (1914 - 2012), probably made from around the mid 1960's onward (not long after Winchcombe moved away from earthenware and into stoneware).
Presented in splendid condition and displaying beautifully. There are a few age-related crazing marks evident on the pale glazed areas, totally natural and commensurate with stoneware from this period.
Measuring 40.5 cms wide x 27.5cms deep x 4.5cms high, this is an imposing and unusually large piece from an historic and highly regarded pottery.
