Margaret J. Lovell Ex.1899-1931 W/Col. N. France
We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely watercolour by the artist MARGARET J. LOVELL, who has signed the painting M. J. Lovell in the lower left hand corner. There was an old label on the old backing board that entitled the painting 'St. Pol de Leon, Finistere'. St. Pol de Leon is a village in the Finistere departement of Brittany in northern France. The painting depicts a square in the village with a street leading downhill from it, leading to the church. There are several townswomen, dressed in traditional costume, walking in the square with a horse and cart going down the street towards the church.
Margaret Lovell was a landscape and coastal painter, who exhibited from 1899 to 1931. She lived in Hampstead Lane, Highgate, London. She exhibited 1 painting at the Royal Academy, 1 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 1 at the Royal Society of British Artists, 1 at the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour and 10 at the Society of Women Artists. Her biographical details are listed in The Dictionary of British Artists.
Her work rarely comes to the market, but we have found three listings on artprice.com, two for watercolours and one for an oil. The two watercolours had an estimated price of £200-£300 in 2007 at Biddle & Webb in Birmingham.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone to complement and is newly framed in a 1 1/8" mottled silver frame that suits it very well. It is ready to hang.
