Louis E. Clark 1877-1923 Oil Country Landscape
We are offering for sale this large landscape oil painting by the artist Louis Edgar Clark, who has signed the painting Louis E. Clark in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a rural landscape view, possibly in Essex, with a couple of figures walking along a path through a sheep filled field, towards a distant church. There is a pond to the right foreground, with gorse bushes and trees next to it. As the gorse bushes are in flower, it would appear to be in late summer.
Louis Edgar Clark, was the eldest son of the well known artist Octavius Thomas Clark 1856-1921. His brother Stanley was also an artist and we presume that they both learned their trade from their father. The large Clark family lived in various parts of what is now north and east London and the rural views of Octavius were drawn from the local villages of Essex.
It would appear that none of the family exhibited their work, so their biographical details are not listed in any of the reference books. They probably found a ready market for their work without the need to exhibit. Octavius had a large family to support and Louis himself was married in 1904. Unfortunately he died at the young age of 46 in 1923.
There are auction records available at the usual sites and the record price for one of Louis E. Clark's oils in recent years, is £678 for a 24" x 16" landscape in 2000.
Most of the information in this description has been gleaned from census records, although there is an interesting article in one of the Essex newspapers online about Octavius T. Clark dating from the 1970s.
The painting has been newly framed in a 3 1/2" antiqued silver frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 29 1/4" x 19 3/8" - 74.25cm x 49.2cm
Frame size: 36 1/4" x 26 1/4" - 92cm x 66.65cm
Medium: Oils on canvas
Condition: Very good. The canvas is unlined, clean and taut and there are two repairs to the canvas, as shown. The frame is new.
