An impressive Georgian Lancashire longcase clock. A swan neck hood pediment surmounted by a wooden finial. Four hood side columns and the original 'verre eglomise' painted glass hood pediment panel. Fine oak casework with walnut crossbanding and trunk side columns. A brass and silvered dial with rococo design corner spandrels. A very well engraved dial centre with a date aperture and recessed seconds dial. An 8-day duration mechanism striking the hours on a bell.

The Coates family of clockmakers are well documented in Loomes' 'Lancashire Clocks and Clockmakers' book and examples are in Liverpool and Preston museums. Archibald Coates is noted as a maker of repute.
