Longcase Clock Richard Garle Winchester 1667-1710

Richard Garle of Winchester
[ 1667 - 1710 ]
Circa 1700
Garle, apprentice to Joseph Windmills 1682 at the age of 14.
Delightful Oak cased 8 day longcase by a very scarce maker, born in 1667 in Leicestershire, Garle learned his trade under the tuition of the eminent Joseph Windmills who’s workshop was located in St Martin's Le Grand, London.
Windmills was regarded as one of the finest clockmakers in seventeenth-century London. In 1699 Windmills was elected as the youngest Warden of the Clockmakers' Company, and sat on committees alongside Thomas Tompion, preceding him as Master of the Company in 1702.
The clock is totally original and came from a very large collection of important clocks in Leicestershire. Amongst the collection were several other important clocks by notable makers, such as, Joseph & John Knibb, Daniel Quare and Edward East to name a few, it really was a collection of distinction.
(We also have a very scarce Three Month Duration, Deadbeat, Bolt and Shutter Maintaining Power Longcase coming to the market).
The clock runs extremely well, keeping excellent time, however I had noticed of late that the gathering pallet would slip every now and then whilst moving along the rack, upon examining it I could see a some wear that required attention, so I have just sent the movement away to have a new pallet fitted, this is a very simple job for my clockmaker and one that is expected to be undertaken after 325 years service. It shouldn’t take too long to be made and fitted but please be aware if you were to purchase the clock there may be a slight delay in awaiting its return.
Eleven inch dial, engraved quarters, winged cherub head spandrels, silvered chapter ring engraved Rich’d Garle, Winchester. Short tail to the 5 numerals, original hands including the seconds hand.
Ringed winding holes to the finely matted centre, ringed and working date aperture.
The movement sits upon its original seating board fitting nicely to the cheeks of the trunk.
Complete with original lock and key, pendulum, weights and crank key.
Collection only however delivery and set up may be possible within a 50 mile radius.
Part exchange taken for another longcase, mantel, bracket or wall clock.
