Liberty Lecturn Bookcase by Leonard Wyburd
Arts and Crafts Liberty Oak Lecturn Bookcase Designed by Leonard Wyburd 1883-1903.
This is a lovely oak bookcase in the Moorish style which was very in vogue during this period. Liberty was opened in 1875 by Arthur Lasenby Liberty and soon became one of the foremost arts and crafts retailers employing Leonard Wyburd (1865-1958) as a designer for Liberty's from 1883-1903. The son of the painter Francis John Wyburd he worked with liberty's for 20 years, he finished with them in 1903 and opened his own shop in 1905 in London.
The Arts and Crafts movement was influenced by overtones of other styles, this one is after the Moorish taste but also at this time gaining influence was the Scottish or Glasgow style. The lattice work on the side of this bookcase is after the Egyptian influence from their Mushrebiyeh style lattice work found on antique furniture from this region. This bookcase is split into two, those with angled reading tops and those with flat tops like this one.
