Large French Garniture Clock Set with Rare Dial
An excellent example of a Victorian clock garniture set with rare 'Penny Moon' dial showing phases of the moon.
The eight day duration circular movement with jewelled pallet stones visible, 'Brocot,' dead-beat escapement and countwheel striking the hours and halfs on a tuned, rear-mounted bell. The pendulum is temperature compensated with two glass phials containing mercury.
Behind a 5" diameter, two-tiered white enamel dial. The chapter having an outer minute track and short black Roman hour numerals with the 'Brocot' regulating peg protruding above the XII. The sunken enamel centre having the escape wheel carriage and pallet arms, brass grommets to the winding, centre and 'scapewheel holes and Breguet style 'open moon' hands. The lower portion of the dial centre has a 'penny moon' circular aperture that displays the lunar state in its literal shape, the disc and the surrounding dial is under-glaze painted with clouds and starry sky. The dial separator is spun brass and the cast brass bezel has a sight ring and flat bevelled glass.
Contained in a drum head style, polished Belgium limestone case. The circular movement housing sits upon a scroll base which in turn is upon the scroll-sided trunk with a square front aperture containing thick bevelled glass through which the mercurial pendulum bob can been seen swinging. It is brass framed and within green veined marble upright pillars. The larger base has conforming veined marble to the front. The rear of the case has a glazed and hinged bezel to the movement and a hinged limestone door to access the pendulum.
The pair of conforming side pieces have circular pot holders upon pillars and the case theme is reflected exactly.
