Large antique dial clock by Evans, Handsworth
A substantial 24 inch wall antique clock dating from c.1860 by Evans, Handsworth.
The honey-coloured oak case has a moulded dial surround, the back box having a locking curved base door, and two hinged and latched side access doors.
The 18-inch dial is in excellent original condition. It is signed EVANS & SONS / SOHO CLOCKS FACTORY / HANDSWORTH. The digits are bold and squared, as are the black painted hands, the minute hand being counterbalanced.
The single fusee timepiece movement has tapered shaped plates, signed for Evans & Sons on the backplate. It is photographed in its unserviced condition, but is to be sold overhauled and guaranteed for 3 years.
The side-hinged cast brass bezel is blackened, and latches shut.
The clockmakers Evans of Handsworth were one of the top makers of skeleton antique clocks in the Victorian period.
John Houghton, formerly the foreman of Boulton & Watt at the Soho factory, took over their clock-making business in 1805 after the decision of the firm to discontinue clock manufacture, calling it The Soho Clock Factory. Houghton was joined by his son-in-law William Frederick Evans and, when the former decided to retire in 1843, Evans continued as WF Evans & Son. The Business ceased trading in 1934.
