Kenneth J.Wood 1936-92 Oil Teal At Bough Beech
This is a beautifully executed oil on board by the artist Kenneth J. Wood, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1984. He has entitled the painting on his card which is attached to the back of the painting 'Teal at Bough Beech'. There are two teal flying low over the water, some of which appears to be frozen.
Bough Beech is a reservoir near Edenbridge in Kent and is well known for its bird population especially in winter. As you can see, in this painting there has been a substantial snow fall to cover the ground and the artist has captured that cold, misty, frostiness that portends further snow falls in the near future.
Kenneth J. Wood 1936-1992, was born in Surrey and lived there for most of his life. According to his card, at the time he painted this work, he was living in Redhill. He was a wildlife artist and keen falconer and member of the British Falconers' Club. He was Honorary Secretary of the Society of Wildlife Artists from 1983 until his death in 1992. He died at the relatively young age of 56.
He illustrated a series of 6 bird plates entitled Birds of the British Countryside for Royal Doulton and some of the work appeared in print form. There are some auction results available for his work, mostly on findartinfo.com, with 10 results listed, with 1 on arcadja.com. There are also some examples shown on google images.
The painting has been newly framed in a 2 3/4 inch wooden, black lacquered frame with warm highlights, which complements the painting very well.. It will be with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
