John W.Schofield RI 1865-1944 Watercolour Anemones
We are offering for sale is this delightful and subtly toned still life watercolour by the artist JOHN WILLIAM SCHOFIELD, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. This painting depicts a bowl of anemones, shaded white throught to pink, in a white ceramic bowl. The bowl is placed on a polished table, which is reflecting both the bowl and the flowers. The painting was obviously exhibited by the artist as, on the old backing paper, was the lable stating the title and that it was No. 4 of his submissions. It does not say where the exhibition was, unfortunately.
JOHN WILLIAM SCHOFIELD, 1865-1944, flourished circa 1899 and was a painter of landscape, flowers and portraits. He was born on the 15th June, 1865. He studied at the Westminster School of Art and in Paris under Bougereau and Lefebvre. He lived in Halifax in Yorkshire in 1889, but later moved between Devon and London. He was elected Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in1903 (RBA) and of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1917 (RI). He was also a Member of the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists (RBC).
From further research, we have found out he married his wife Emma Anna Augusta (nee Cunnick) in 1891 in Hastings, although at the time of the Census in early 1891, he was a boarder in Whitby. By 1911, they were living at 28 Finchley Road, St. John's Wood, London NW8, in a house formerly owned by the Poet Thomas Hood (1799-1845), who is commemorated on a Blue Plaque on the house. In the 1939 Register, they were living at 38 Marlborough Hill, St. John's Wood, which is presumably where he died on 29th October, 1944. He left £785, which is £35,000 in today's money.
There are 7 of his painting in the national collection, which can be viewed at artuk.org.
He exhibited 138 works at the Royal Society of British Artists in Birmingham, 29 at the Royal Academy, 84 at the British Institution, 15 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 10 at the Arlington Gallery and 27 other works at various major provincial galleries. Further biographical details may be found in the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, The Dictionary of British Artists and Graves Dictionary lists his exhibited works up to 1893.
